Water pipes gradually deteriorate over time like everything else in the home. Through the years, changing temperatures can cause expansion and contraction. This will cause damage to the pipes and lead them to eventually fall apart or burst open.
Shut the Water Off
The first thing you will need to do is turn off the water to the whole home by finding the main stop-tap. This is usually located in the front of the house. Once this is off then you will prevent water from continuing to spray inside your walls. You should also let the water drain out entirely by turning on the outside hose valves in your home.
Turn Off the Electricity
If you notice that the water is leaking near any electrical wires you will need to switch off the electricity to the home. If the breaker box has water or moisture inside, you should not turn off the electricity. Instead, you will need to call professionals to handle the situation because it is too dangerous to perform repairs on your own.
Clear Out Any Standing Water
There may be water that collected after the water was shut off in areas around where the pipe burst. This could be inside of walls, under floors, or inside of the ceiling. You may have to puncture a hole in these areas in order to get the water out of them. If there appears to be a significant area of water damage it is best to call professionals.
